David Sarnoff Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School
Originally a physicist, Marco Iansiti joined the faculty of the Harvard Business School in 1989. He has created two courses, Starting New Ventures (with Professor Myra Hart) and Managing Product Development, and has taught a variety of Executive and MBA courses on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Operations. He is a recognized expert on technology and operations strategy and the management of innovation.
Professor Iansiti’s research has focused on technological innovation, product development, entrepreneurship and operations’specifically the drivers of productivity, flexibility and adaptation in organizations. For more than 10 years, Iansiti investigated over 100 companies ranging from major players like Microsoft, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Ford Motor Company, Unilever and ATT to ventures like Yahoo! and SupplierMarket/Ariba. His research investigates the implementation of successful strategies for companies that wish to better understand and manage innovation and operations in complex networked industries, also known as “business ecosystems.” His work examines the key drivers of sustained profitability, value creation and operating leverage. In addition, his latest research explores the interaction between strategy and execution, focusing on the drivers of strategic integrity.
Professor Iansiti has advised a wide variety of Fortune 500 firms in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to software and internet advertising, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Eurizon Financial Group.
He has authored and co-authored more than 50 articles, papers, book chapters, cases and notes. His previous books, Technology Integration: Making Critical Choices in a Dynamic World and The Keystone Advantage: What the New Dynamics of Business Ecosystems Mean for Strategy, Innovation and Sustainability, were published by Harvard Business School Press. His most recent book, co-authored with Steven Sinofsky and published in 2009 by Wiley Press, is One Strategy: Organization, Planning and Decision Making.
Professor Iansiti holds an AB and a PhD in Physics from Harvard.
